It shouldn't change anything but I read on one web site that some of the new pots use lye on the curing process that could change the param. however this was one web site out of the thousands, ok mybe 100's that I looked at. Most people say it's fine and a great addition. I had them in my tank for about 2 months before changing it with no problems.

A terra cotta flower pot is normally ok but I would wonder about the red clay pots. They normally have a lot of iron in them hence the color. How much of it might leech out is beyond me but it could.

If you want to check it out, put it in water for a week and test the water. Make sure to test the tap water before and see if effects the test results. A tiny change is expected but anything drastic, say 2 points in GH/KH might be a warning not to use it. As well as 0.5 change in pH.

As for testing for iron, if your water starts to turn red then don't use the clay pot. There is really no reliable inexpensive test to check iron levels.
