When should water be changed?

My fish tank has been up and running for a week. I've had 2 tiger barbs in it since tuesday or wednesday. I was wanting to put 2 new tiger barbs in it today but wasn't sure if I need to do like a 20% water change or something first. I am yet to change any of the water not sure when I should do it. And when I go to change the water whenever I should, should I test the water ph and ammonia before or after I do the water change?

if your tank has been running for only a week DO NOT add anything else to it.

Not to go into too much detail but you will only be at the very start of your cycle and to be honest you are walking a fine line with just two fish let alone more.

Test your ammonia levels before doing a water change and if you see any (which you will) change out 50% of the water. Test again tomorrow and again, if you still read ammonia change out 50% again.

With fish in the tank you really need to be keeping the ammonia levels as low as phsically possible.

Until you get to the point where after 3-4 days of testing without a reading you are not ready for more fish.

It can be frustrating waiting for a tank to cycle, I've been there god knows how many times (4 this year alone) and have a tank in the first fortnight of its cycle now so I know how it feels.

For the sake of the fish keep up the water changes :)

When I first set up a tank, I make sure to do water changes at least twice weekly until my Ammonia and Nitrite levels read 0. After that, I always do a water change once a week.
