What should i out in a 30 gallon tank

I am planning on asking for a 30 gallon tank for christmas and i was wondering what type of fish i should put in it. I like Zebra danios and oto cats. I hate goldfish(too messy). I was also thinking about saving up my money to buy a 55 gallon tank. I want to keep it freshwater and tropical.

In my 10 gallon tank:
  • 1 Red male Betta
  • 1 Otocinclus Catfish
In my 29 gallon tank:
  • 4 Zebra danios

"Hate" is such a strong word.

Goldfish are not necessarily messy. There are a few tricks to make maintenance much easier actually. Usually, it is the temeprature that influences their metabolic rate. The higher the temperature, the faster they metabolize their foods thereby expelling the wastes as quickly as they eat. Kinda like a cycle really. However as goldfish are temperate species, the temperature need not exceed 76 degrees Fahrenheit. Higher temperature also cuts down their lifespan so this is best avoided.

For young goldfish, aim for at least 40% and over of protein content with high fiber included. I feed them 3-4 times a day. They get extra plant cuttings, homemade gel foods, Mazuri gel foods, Hikari Lionhead and anything else I can find within my reach although their diet is regulated as my ryukins are prone to commercial foods that contain too much starch making them a little floaty as they eat the stuff.

The filtration can go as high as 4x to allow the filtration system to cope with the wastes. Canister filters are your best bets as they take less space although they don't come cheap. I use filter floss and sponges as my only filter media for their filtration. It needs not be fancy.

My goldfish tanks are all barebottom with plants kept in containers. The last time my tanks had gravel, they did take up a lot of my time to vacuum them thoroughly so I went for barebottom instead. Barebottom setups won't appeal most people but if they take a gander over some barebottom setups with plants kept in pots, the setup is actually very pretty to look at.

I'd suggest reading all pages of this blog thread.

If ever you decide on goldfish, a 30g certainly will fit 2-3 pearlscales or go with two orandas. For fancy strains, I always aim for a 15g per first fish with 10g more per additional fish. Goldfish are sociable by nature so it is inadvisable to keep only one by itself. As to why the stocking guideline is very loose or so it seems, goldfish do grow big and fat especially orandas. I keep a 7" black oranda myself and despite being a poop machine, he is still the cutest ever.

Hope this helps.

I'm ready for the pressure.
The drama and the pleasure!
If there is one thing I want to see here, it's HUMOR.
I believe I can fly!
I believe I can touch the sky!
I think about it every night and day!
I stand in awe of my body.

i've hade goldfish before i kept them at 72F and i could see strings of poop about an inch long every time i cleaned the tank. Plus you cant have as many goldfish as you can tropical fish in the same about of space. As i said before a want it to be freshwater and tropical.
