What to put in 3rd tray of Canister Filter?

Hi, I use a Penn-Plax Cascade 1000 on a 285litre(75USgal) freshwater planted tank, containing mainly small community fish.

The filtration works from the bottom-up on this filter. In the first tray I have a coarse filter sponge, in the second tray I have a thin fine sponge followed by carbon. The third tray has a thin fine sponge but that is it, I assume it is left empty for whatever I want to put in there.

Any recommendations?

i have the exact same filter. in the 3rd tray, i've had a mixture of ceramic cylinders and gravel from my tank, in a filter bag, with the thin filter floss on top. it builds up a good biological filter pretty quickly. good luck!

IME i like to put larger filter media in the first baskets followed by smaller and smaller things.

you can smash (what is it terra cotta or clay?) pot and use the pieces for your first chamber, nano bio balls are nice too, ceramic pieces seem to work good as well and then i would prob. put carbon last

I'd got with ceramic rings or bioballs. Give the bacteria a good place to live in something you aren't going to be trying to clean out each time you service the filter.
