I am thinking it is from over feeding, whatever it is has appeared in a day, was over most of my crypts and all over the gravel. I did my usual weekly water change a day early so I could get rid of what I could see.

Anyone seen this type of mould, algae or whatever it is before?

I am going to try and curb my over feeding habits, to try and help.

Looks like what happened when I replaced the air pump on my under gravel filter... But assuming you didn't shoot a cloud of crud into your tank like I did I'd agree that you might have fed a tad much and it got broken up and settled then no one wanted to eat it - that's assuming you feed flakes which is what it looks like and then the food specs may have grown some mold

That would make sense. Haven't you heard? We make yogurt, not sense.

I spotted something very like this a while back on some of my plants, they were crypts too. I only noticed it after taking a close-up photo [attac hed below]. Haven't seen it recently, but I'll take a closer look when the lights are on later. I was puzzled, but as nothing seemed to result I ignored it and then forgot all about it until now.

Wait to see if it returns.
It looks a lot like the mess my cories make of their sinking wafers. But it's weird that it covers the crypt so perfectly. It could be molded over food particles, did if come off easily?

taking a break from fish-keeping.
3 lovely male betta still keep me company.

Those corys look nice Byron! very cute.

I managed to get rid of most of it.... Not sure, it was all over the gravel too.

I think your right Olympia, I have been putting in a sinking algae wafers every night for the corys and otos, and I put them between the crypts for them to hunt them out. I think its probably fall out from all the wafers, as I never used to put them in until recently.

I bet its from that.

Cheers guys.

You never did say - did it come up easily, or return after you siphoned? I sincerely hope it was just as you suspect - caused by the food and gone now for good. Those algae wafers DO mold up really quickly if not eaten right away.

Good luck!

It was only yesterday, so I will wait and see... the gravel cleaned up fine, and the more exposed leafs where easy enough to clean with my hand, I gave the rest of the plant a good syphon and most of it came up, but there is still some dust like particles around the very base of the crypts. I bet its from a combo of algae wafer debris and this new tetra crisps colour pro that I have been feeding them, they break up into fine particles when the fish eat them.. might change to something else soon.

Peace always..

Do you have an open top tank by any chance. I get that all the time. Between air born particles, mulm, break down of plant material and my bristle nose burrowing under rocks this gets spread all over my leaves. Not matter how much I vacuum the gravel, it comes back. I don't think my thriving plants can utilize the break down fast enough. Plus my tank is only a 29 gallon in which the leaves all cover my substrate for the most part. So I have leaves that are getting shadowed and breakdown alot.
