I have several set ups with ply sand and 1 black sand and all them are planted and its no issue keeping them clean at all. And for the benefits fine gravel or sand is much better for plants to develop a good root system which they often struggle to do in the large gravel that's like peanut sized. Another benefit is cory cats they looovvee sand adn any large gravel or sharp edged would be very bad for them.
