Weekend Getaway!!

Hello Fish Folk,

I will be going out of town for a long weekend in May (4 nights). I wanted to ask you what you did when you went out of town? How do those automatic feeders work? I've also seen the little tablets you put in the water for X amount of days feeding. I can get someone to come to my house to feed them if I have to but I live in a rural area and it would be a lot to ask of someone (I'm not above it however). Any input would be appreciated.

I have malawi ciclids (5) about 4-5 inches each and 2 plecos in a 55 gallon tank.

Would it be okay to leave the light off while I'm gone or should I put it on a timer? Dee

An automatic feeder maybe, those tabs will screw-up your water.

Your fish will be fine if not fed for 4 days imo, saves any water quality worries while away as well.

I would definately put the lights on a timer though, useful even when you are there.

I used to have an automatic feeder, and the batteries died and the fish went a week without food. They where hungry, but in good condition. I never forgot to change the batteries once a month though. :D

leaving fish for a weekend

It is not a problem to leave them for 4 days without food. Some tablets do not spoil the quality of the water at all, you have to check in the store. We have automatic feeders and they work well. Only once something happened with timing and it went off at night, but the fishes didn't mind it at all (they were not hungry when we came back). Our feeders work for more than a month, but I still have to come from the countryside to check on the rest - the water level and the cleanliness, the plants and the general condition. I am afraid of leaving the lights on timer lest something goes wrong with electricity in my absence, but maybe I am overreacting. It is not dark where our tanks stand anyway.

Thank you everyone! Hopefully they won't start taking bites out of one another. They are serious about their food.... Dee
