when adding drift wood you should soak it in water for at least a week changing water every couple of hours or when it gets rather dark. adding drift wood from a lake is a bit risky due to contaminants in the water such as oil and other harmful chemicals. scrubbing to get as much lose dirt an such off. using a mild solution of bleach and water is a good thing to get rid of bacteria and possible parasites in the wood. soaking takes out the tannins in the wood as well. when using bleach only use it for a couple of the changes then continue to soak in reg water. if the piece is small enough to fit in a pot you can also boil it and wouldnt have to use bleach. before placing in the tank soak a couple of times in chlorinated water. tannins is whats making your water tea colored. as for the tannins and tea colored water. there isnt much you can do it will slowly dissipate over time.
