Want a new fish tank but not sure of what kind

So I am looking into getting a new tank and not sure what to get. I currently have a 20gal tank with angelfish a betta and some tetras but I want something different. I have been thinking about getting an oscar tank but the only problem is I don't have enough room for a big tank. about the biggest i can get is 20gal. The reason why i would like oscars is cause they eat gold fish which i think would be cool to watch. I have also thought about breeding guppies but i don't know if i want a tank with just guppies and what do i do if i get overan with guppies cause what would i do with them. So those are my thoughts let me know if you have any cool ideas for a fish tank that would be fun.

well i really cant help you with the first topic since its all up to you. theres so many fish tanks and fish that theres just endless possibilities!! you might be able to get a 20 gallon long and put a smaller species cichlid in there? if you want to breed guppies id say a good 10 gallon?

Welcome aboard.

An oscar will grow to 12 inches and more and this alone requires a 100 gallons tank with strong filtration. Being voracious eaters, they are big waste producers. A 20 gallons is not enough for oscars. Not even an angelfish which requires 18 inches height of tank. The angelfish also grow to almost 8 inches in diameter. I have one marble strain here that is almost 6 inches in diameter.

In a 20 gallons, you have the choice for otos, cories, tetras, barbs, danios and rasboras. It is possible to have an all-male guppy tank. Just prepare your Melafix in case nipping occurs. I'd avoid the females unless you are prepared to be overrun by their fry. You may wish to sell or give away the fry.:)

They are rather too small for a puffer. Small but still terrible fin nippers. Otos are the only fish I'd keep with dwarf puffers although the chances of them nipping an oto is still there. By the way, dwarf puffers usually measure only 3-4 cm so they're too small. Be ready with a supply of snails for them to munch on. Without those, their teeth tend to overgrow making it difficult for them to eat well. This alone will kill them on starvation.

thanks for the advice, as of now i am leaning towards a cichlid tank because they would give me the joy of watching them eat small feeder guppies and they also have vibrant colors that I think are cool. but i still need to reasearch more about them before i finally decide

The only cichlids that wil fit in a 20 gallons are dwarf cichlids of South America, kribensis and shell dwellers of Lake Tanganyika. I'd avoid the angelfish. They can reach a height of more than 7 inches hence 18 inches height is needed. Angels also grow to a diameter of 6-8 inches max. Angels are very fast growers in my experience.:)
