Viva la Résistance - some help with a non fish problem....sorta

ok so i started to set up my old tank on the weekend and ran into a big problem..... room mates. They tag teamed me, so after lots of arguments it was decided (by them not me) that one tank was the limit to the house...... their reason, too much power cost......WTH its a 10 gallon with a 55w heater, filter, no light yet but was gonna get one may wait now.

so my question to you guys do you know of a caculator to work out how much it will cost to run the set up ive never been good at the maths thing >.< i dont wanna play dirty but if i can get it to under a $1 a day im pretty sure i can convince them because they both sponcer a child under the dollar a day thing.... but thats a last resort >.<

Here's an example how your can calculate your cost, check the wattage on Filter, Heater & Lights.
watts/1000 = kW x hours of operation = kWh x kWh rate = cost
1000 watts/1000 = 1 kW x 45 hours of operation = 45 kWh x $.068 = $3.06

On a side note since you wanna run a 10g (which is what I use for cray's & shrimp) mine are set up with florescent small screw in bulbs that give off 40 watts, but only using 7watts to power it, saving acc to the lable right there $32. I'm sure you could find these bulbs in Australia too. Second I don't run no heater as my room temp does not drop below 70's anyways, so check what you room temp is and what you really may consider to house in there, you may not need a heater at all (or in other words you can house something in there that does not require tropical heat). Leaving you with the 24/7 running filter and its cost that you need to calculate based off its watts & whatever you kwh cost are there.

Just some thoughts to make everybody happy there

ok so here goes

Filter, Elite jet flow internal 75, 5 watts
5/1000 = .005 x 24 = .12 x 18.79c = 2.25c

heater, 55w ( not sure on this one will need it in winter at night but summer is ok)
55/1000 = .055 x 12 = .66 x 18.79c = 12.40c

Light, 20 w tube
20/1000 = .02 x 10 = .02 x 18.79c = 3.75c

so totals to 18.40c a day if maths right. figured it was something cheap like that, thanks for help now i just gotta convince room mates witch shouldnt be to hard ill even pay extra 2 bucks rent a week if they want. ^^

Well, be nice don't just 'toss the math' on them. Explain that you'd offer to look for energy saving bulbs like what I got, explain the fact you only need the heater in the winter times etc etc Maybe explain them how relaxing a nicly set up tank with live plants & shrimp can be and interesting to watch etc etc
