Used Tank

Hello all, First off I want to say Hi! I just found this site & figured it was a good place to ask questions since I couldn't find much elsewhere.

My brother gave me his fish tank, it is a 50gal Hexagon shape. He has had it for 15yrs or so & has used the same filters with it ever since. He has a Fluval 303 & uses undergravel with a powerhead attached as well. I have read before that undergravel is a pain to clean when it is needed. So I was just thinking of using the Fluval for now until I can upgrade it to a newer one. Would this be possible? Would it be enough to clean the tank without the undergravel? My brother says no that I need both, but just want some other opinions.

Thanks for your time in advance
