Used Media?

Hello Fellow Fish Lovers....

I recently purchased a used Eheim Canister Filter and the trays included Eheim Ehfi Substrat Pro Filter Media.

The unit has not been used in a year.

Is it okay to utilize the media that came with the item or should it be replaced with fresh media?

Have fun and be PATIENT!

As this came from another aquarist, I would either disinfect it or buy new. Some bacteria can remain "ready" for very long periods and must be killed. And given the fuss in using bleach and then getting all that out, it is not worth the risk in my view.

As for media, you can save a lot of money by using Fluval instead of Eheim. I have two Eheim canisters and one Rena, and I use Fluval in all of them. The ceramic disks are identical anyway. And the second stage "bio" media is fine, with Fluval it is the BioMax. The cost is about 1/3 that of the Eheim Ehfi Substrat. The pads you will need to buy Eheim so they fit.

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If you’re going to take it under your wing then you’re responsible for it. Every aspect of its life is under your control, from water quality and temperature to swimming space. [Nathan Hill in PFK]
