Hello,

I saw this self cleaning tank on the internet a few days ago and I love the concept for keeping a beta at work. However, I'm worried about the size and shape of the tank. It is only 1/2 gallon of water. It would probably need a full water change every day but I wanted to hear what the experienced thought about this set up. here is the link to the tank:

There is a little video on the page that demonstrates how it works.

I liked how happy the kids were to pour fish poo-water into the potted plant:lol:

I'm of two minds on this one.
1) Anyone that tells you that you can get away without basic tank maintenance is absolutely full of the same stuff those kids were pouring out
2) The physics behind the design are sound, I'm guessing the substrate sits on a little stand so that there is a void underneath and when you add water to the tank to start the siphon all the waste is pulled into the void and up the tube.

Don't know how comfortable I'd be with no filter, and I didn't see anywhere for a heater either, also 1/2 gallon(with a tiny vertical footprint to boot) doesn't sound that great either.

Effectively apply that idea to a 20 gallon & you may have something that saves you some maintenance. Some, not all. You could make your own a lot cheaper with a large beer mug.
