Trace Elements?

I know you usually test for these in a saltwater tank, but I'm wondering if it is necessary or useful to test in a freshwater tank? If so, what test kit would you use and what would you want to monitor? Thanks!

Not too common in fresh water, most times I've heard of it is with high tech plant setups and over zealous algae control.
