Welcome tot he Forum!
Whether it is about water parameters or buying fish - Don't trust any fish store chances are extremely well they do not know what they're talking about and/ or guide you into very wrong directions. So just do your own research on anything :)

For the water I'd buy a liquid test kit myself; test it and post here for discussion what's going on with your water. Ideally you want to have a combo liquid set that tests NO2, NO3, Ammonia pH and hardness. These kits are available by API or Tetra. API is a lil more expensive but lasts FOREVER and Tetra is a lil cheaper and you can find these online at Walmart and can ship it from there to store so you avoid shipping charges. Also the chain stores like PetCo, Petsmart have these API Master Kits.

Just to add - I don't trust the LFS (local fish store) because sometimes they use dip test strips. As a biochem major in college - I know they aren't that accurate - you are so much better getting a liquid test kit.

Aunt Kimmie is right - get the kit and post the results here - there are many many experts here that can help (I'm not one - but I have a great ear)

Oh - and welcome Pauline! ~cheers

Hi Pauline,

Welcome to the forum. I have been coming here for almost a year and I am delighted with teh advise. I took the advise to use API and I am delighted I made the purchase. I recommend you do the same.

The kit is easy to use and accurate and in my opinion, worth the money. You don't want grief when taking care of fish. You want results.
