Unhappy temperature dropped too low

My husband and I stay away all for a few days a week due to communting to work - my father in law comes in and feeds the fish for us... this week has been no different however we arrived home this evening and 40 out of the 50 fish we have are dead! the tank temperature had dropped to 40 degrees... we are not sure if this is to do with the weather over the last few days which has been around -6 some nights and as the heating in the house wasnt on... we now have the heating on and are monitoring the temperature but it doesnt seem to be rising... does anyone have any ideas as to whether it was the weather that has caused this to happen or is it plain bud luck and the heater has packed up?

I am so sorry to hear about your fish loss.

When the house temp dropped to the low the heater was pushed to its maximum capacity and that stress may have caused it to fail. That would be my guess anyways, if that is the case you are going to need a new heater.
