tank as a gift! idea will it work ?

so my sister is always interested in my tank so i decided that for her bday i would get her a small tank of her own, now i know that ill have to cycle the tank to devalop BB but could i set the filter up in my tank (250l) for the next and have it runnin for the next few weeks to devalop it. The tank will just be a small 2ft tank and be live planted.

so would this reduce the cycle time ?

would it be good enough to add a single fish or 2 straigh away ?

In two to three weeks time, the filter ,if allowed to run in your tank, will have developed a bacterial colony capable of allowing one or two SMALL fish depending on the size of the tank. Personally, I would get my sister nothing smaller than 20 gal. This would make it loads easier to maintain a stable enviornment and also give her more options with regards to fish. IT is important that the filter be moved from your tank to hers quickly so that the bacterial colony does not begin to die off which will happen if the material in the filter isn't kept wet in aquarium water (not tapwater). Tapwater contains possibly chlorine and or,chloramines both of which will kill off substantial portion of the bacteria(good kind) You may know all this already but it may be woth mentioning to your sister. Always clean this material whether it be sponges, pads, or cartridges by swishing it around in old aquarium water that you remove each week during 20 to 25 percent water changes. Hope some of this helps.
P.S. I would also move the one or two SMALL fish to her aquarium within a few hours of placing the filter from your tank to hers to keep the bacteria active . Other wise a pinch of fish food each day should keep the bacteria alive.

Either run her filter with yours. Or when you give her the tank for her b-day tell her when she's got it filled to come by you and get filter media from your tank (has necessary bacteria on it already) and then either she can add this to her filter, or wash out all the "gunk" in her tank which will bring the necessary bacteria in her's too.

Do you have ANY idea what kinda fish she prefers? Based of that I'd buy a tank.

she really enjoys my B/N catfish and my loach but i think both would get a little big for her tank, she only has a small 1 b/r unit so no big flashy setup possible. she is a fan of bettas, used to have one of them in those 'wanna be fish tank' jars they sell in petstores around here, so i was thinking maybe something like this

Well there ya go if she likes Betta's. Thou personally, for the looks, I'd rather have 3 Betta's and 6 Cory and then toss few neat plants in there for her I think that'd be real nice....

Man I need a brother too that get's me another tank for Xmas or my b-day lol
