Tape has always been my method for attaching a background to a tank. Though since I prefer a black background these days I just paint the backs of my tanks with a latex paint.

For the plastic paper backing, I use cooking oil. Smear over the back of the tank, and smooth down with a credit card.

It takes a while to get all the bubbles out, but well worth the effort. It looks much brighter than if taped to the back.

the back of my tank is painted black with chalk board paint :D

my tank before had a textured backing that you silicone into the tank.

my dads tank had stick on mirror, stuck on a board and rested to the back of his tank.
