switching filters in cycled aquarium

Hi everyone -

When I first set up my 30g I had a 20g whisper filter on the top, and a submersible filter at the bottom of the tank.

fortunately, the latter has turned out to be a piece of junk, so now I've just the 20g filter for a 30g tank ... it's taking a while but I am starting to see traces of ammonia.

So it's time to put in a stronger
filter - but of course, most of my good bacteria is in the old filter. I'm guessing I'll have to leave both running at the same time for a while. Has anybody else had to do this? How long do you usually give it before pulling the old filter out? (I'm going to use it elsewhere...)

1 Cocker Spaniel - Zoey
1 Mudskipper - Pangea
3 Bettas - Mars, Venus & Neptune
20g FW community tank
30g SW tank: porcupine puffer, fiji puffer, clown fish

Why not leave both running forever? That would be awesome filtration for a 30G tank :)

If not, I'd both running for a month or so, then take the insert out of the old filter, but leave it running, and then after a bit take the old filter out all together.
