ive read different statistics from different places about sand/ gravel at the bottom of your tank. some say that you should have 2 pounds per gallon and others say 1 pound per gallon. what do you all think? :p

The weight isn't important, it's the depth. The substrate should be between 1 to 3 inches depending on whether or not you have plants. I guess the size of the tank and the inhabitants can also play a roll. For a ten gallon tank I probably would have 1" to 2". If you have fish that like to dig up the gravel then you'd probably have closer to 3". I shoot for about 2 inches of gravel in my tanks. 3" toward the back of the tank.

If you go planted, no less then 2" I'd say. If the gravel/ sand is too shallow the plants will keep drifting up on you.
