strange acting blood parrot cichlid

hey my girlfriend has a 25 gallon tank with 2 blood parrots in it i've been talking to her dad and he said everything is zeroes except nitrite which is 3 and ph is 7.5. they have a 20g hang on filter and not sure of the heater but he said it was good enough. there are a few fake rock work things in the tank and 1 or 2 fake plants. they say the fish have been acting strangely i.e hanging out in the corners, breathing hard, not eating, spasming/seizuring and they are looking quite pale. they have had them 2 months or so and they have been acting like that for the past week or two. they have tried changed the water several times and adding a product to lower the nitrites but nothing worked. any help would be greatly appreciated.

sorry about posting this two times its just they are getting really desperate.

The tank is still cycling.
What test kit are they using?
I would do another water change, if nitrites are 3 ppm, that is enough to kill the fish. I would do water changes twice a day if needed to keep nitrites under .25 ppm.

I would also take all the decorations out of the tank and make sure that the gravel is clean... hollow ornaments can build up fish poop and fish food and become toxic dumps... change the water maybe even about 70 percent. Twistersmom is correct the nitrite will kill the fish.

Fighttest, do you have any filter media, plants, or gravel from a cycled tank, that you can take over to help seed the cycle?

Make sure they did not over clean the filter or recently change out filter media. If you can find out what filter they are using, might help to figure out what happened.

I know some cichlids do dig, I do not know if the Blood parrots are one of them.

That could be the problem. The foam pad is where the bacteria grows and should never be washed in chlorinated water.
If you take a sponge over from your tank or put some of your gravel in his filter, it should help.

Do test the tap water as well, just to be safe.
