Question Stocking question

I don't understand they stocking rule. Is it an inch per gallon or something over there? Well here it's 2litres of water per cm of fish. It makes no sense. an 8cm dwarf gourami needs way more space than an 8cm golden barb. Should I follow the rule anyway?

This is the article by another of our members that is "stickied" at the head of this section of the Forum to which the previous member referred:

As you will see from reading it, there are many important factors for deciding how many fish will be suitable in an aquarium. The actual size of the fish at maturity is one of these, but not the only one, which is why the "inch of fish per gallon" idea is very flawed. The article should explain them so I won't repeat all that, but if you have questions after reading it, ask away.

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If you’re going to take it under your wing then you’re responsible for it. Every aspect of its life is under your control, from water quality and temperature to swimming space. [Nathan Hill in PFK]
