With tanks that do not have length, you want to avoid active swimming fish and stay with quieter, more sedate fish. Gourami and other anabantids are suitable, the smaller cichlids, and for shoaling fish there are the rasbora (in the Cyprinid family), some characins such as the pencilfish, hatchetfish for the surface, and the quieter tetra (cardinals, some of the Rosy clade in Hyphessobrycon, etc).
Depending upon your water parameters, lots to choose from among these. Check our profiles [you kow about them?] for info on species specifics.
All of the fish mentioned need live plants, and there are many of these to choose from too. The light neecds to be sufficient to reach into the tank.
