Sterilizing former land hermit crab tank?

Hi there, I have a 10G tank that I used to house my land hermit crabs until I moved them into a much more comfortable 22G tank. I'd like to start using the 10G for fish again, but I don't know how to sterilize it without introducing harmful chemicals. Is it even possible, or do I need to buy a new tank?

A really good rinse is all it will need.

So basically, just take it out and blast it with the hose? All right, I think I can handle that. Thanks! :)

Hey Willow! Things still seem to be going strong around here, huh?

Waffle, yeah that should be good enough. If you are still skeptical, I'd suggest using hot water from your tap to rinse with.

Another thing I was thinking about... Has this tank ever been used for fish before? It is in fact a fish tank, right? Not a tank rated for a reptile/hermit crabs? A wise thing to do would be to check it for leaks. You can do this by putting the empty tank on top of some newspapers and filling it up 1/4 of the way and wait a day and check for leaks, then fill it up 1/2 and wait another day and check for weeks, and repeat until it is completely full and hold the water up to a week with no leaks. That's just a suggestion on how I would do it, other people may have more effective methods.

Wouldn't want you to run into trouble with a leaky tank!

Any more details about the set up of the tank would help us steer you the right way if you need any more help.

Yes; long ago, I kept a tiny puffer in it. When the puffer died, I started keeping hermit crabs in it. I'll try your leak testing method. 10G tanks aren't that expensive anyway, but I do have some nostalgia attached to this particular tank, you know?
