Starting a 55 gallon, What should I put in?

I have a 10 gallon and have been keeping fish for quite a while. I have always done communities of small fish and want to do larger fish for once. I plan on seeding filter material from an established tank with one or maybe two fish, and adding more fish gradually.

I am interested in Blood Red Parrots, Jack Dempsey's, and Angel Fish. I know I can only do the the Blood Red Parrots or the Jack Dempsey's, not both. What I am interested in is some stocking ideas built around one of these two center piece fish.
Thank you for any help!

Well, so long as you're not worried about doing a "biotope" sort of tank, I think you could do something like a JD, a river syno of some type for the bottom and maybe a school of fast dithers like giant danios. To increase your odds of success, I'd recommend getting the Dempsey young and raising him in the tank along with the rest of the fish. Keep him well fed and avoid using feeder fish. Cross your fingers and hope that he's peaceful!

Synodontis catfish are a genus of catfish with all species residing in Africa (to my knowledge). There are a few species that live in the African rift lakes (Lake Malawi, Lake Tanganyika) that prefer those sorts of water conditions (very hard and basic water) but many come from the rivers of West Central Africa (i.e. the Congo River basin) and therefore have more typical tropical fish requirements (pH just below neutral, water on the soft side).

Here's a list of them, ordered by hits, which should help reflect their popularity/availability in the aquarium trade:

Specifically, S. nigrita are fairly common and won't outgrow your tank.
