Question Special ordering fish

A couple of weeks ago, I asked the fish guy at my lfs about special orders. I asked him mainly about special ordering purple spaghetti eels. He said he would check with the special order people and see what they had. The next week, he was on vacation. When he said he would check with them, he made it sound like he was going to order them. I told him I just wanted to know the price, so he decided not to order them. So this week, he's back. He said that he could get some now, and the price was unknown until they came in. Am I obligated to buy the eels if they're too expensive for me? I didn't ask him to get them, he decided that by himself. Can't he sell them to other people if I don't buy them? A couple of weeks ago I saw some baby arowanas for sale in a tank, and I'm sure they don't normally have those! (Just imagine having that growing in the tank for a couple of months before you can find someone with a monster tank!) The black arowanas were cool, and cute when small, but those things get to be a good few feet in length before they're through growing. But that's getting off the point. Am I still obligated to buy the eels? I would like to keep a good relationship with me and the fish guy (his name is Seth, so we won't call him 'the fish guy' anymore.)?

I guess for me, I would have made that very very clear to him. Maybe call him first thing tomorrow if tonight is too late for your store where you are. Let him know, you want them but you have a max price and tell him if it is over that, you can't afford to buy them.

I can't imagine that he can't get a price on them. It would only take a phone call to the supplier. Even if they can't give you an exact price, at least you could get a ballpark idea so you'll know if you can afford them.

Ask him if he's going to order them whether you buy them or not. If not, tell him you need that estimated price. That's not unreasonable.

Good luck.

Stupid school. Now I can't call them for 7 hours. Maybe longer if we have to go to band practice, but that's either from 3:30 - 5:30 or 6:30 - 8:00. We're a "prestigious band". Wish I'd known that before I signed up!
But we do go to some cool places to play. I think the two hour practices are only for football season.

Personally, if they are ordered specially for me, I consider them sold BUT my LFS guy tells me the cost before I ask for them to be ordered. He looks them up in his suppliers' catalogues, adds on his margin and says what they'll be. If it's too much I just say "no" and choose something else. He's good on price, he won't order his regular stock if the price is too high. He gets them when the price is better or they are put on special by the suppliers. As already mentioned your guy should be able to give you the price before you commit to them.

You're not obligated to buy them, especially if you did not put down a deposit. However, I agree with others. Getting a price for you is a simple phone call on the employees part.

No,you are not obligated to buy them and don't let him guilt you into it if you're not comfortable with the price. As already mentioned he knows exactly what price he can sell them to you for. When my LFS does a special order they call their supplier to make sure they have it in stock then give me the price for it.If I want it i pay a deposit. When the order comes in they keep it seperate from the other fish and call me.

He said he couldn't get a price on them because he wasn't even sure the special order suppliers even had them in stock, but if they do he'll order them tomorrow, whether I buy them or not. He told me he didn't expect the price to be more than $20, which is really good considering it was about $40 each for special ordering freshwater pipefish (which I ended up not doing).

I don't mean to avert the attention of this thread, but my question is on the topic...

I have been waiting since oh... the second or third week of may for a special order of celestial danios. I had followed up for the two months to see if they had them available yet, but they would constantly say "the fish industry is really tight and our supplier doesn't have them now" It's been so long and I'm suspecting them to not ever call saying that they ordered them. I have no experience in this situation of special ordering a fish species and have no idea how to go about this. To be honest I am taking this as a sign of incompetence and lack of effort on the LFS...

If they don't have the fish, they don't have it. There's nothing they can do until the fish come to the suppliers from their suppliers. On the other hand, if the fish store just hasn't called or is too lazy to order the fish (idk what their reasons *cough*excuses*cough* might be) they are, like you said, incompetent and you should try another store.
