@Pep here's 2 set ups same size tank, one with black sand one with play sand....It reallyyyy strongly depends who you wanna house in there, a lot fish or shrimp or even plants for this matter 'pop' a lot more in color on dark substrate (sand or gravel) also not to forget dark substarte is much more natural for most fish. So I'd try make a decision off of that.
Feel free to check out my other tanks under my name here to the left under the "Aquarium" tap have quite some set up's with fine black and fine brown gravel too.

For hardening the water, the play sand barley did nothing for me and I got super soft water (which kinda is not cool, cause I was hoping it would up it some) the black sand didn't do anything at all, not even a lil bit. Maybe cause both been washed few times before I added them, maybe if I hadn't done that it would have upped my water at least a lil of well live & learn right

Oh, I have checked out your tanks Angel And Byron's and many others on here that have experience. Lots of VERY nice looking tanks with great ideas.

As for what I am housing I don't want hijack this thread anymore than I already have so I will start a thread up in the freshwater tank forum for feedback there.

I am going to go black sand or black fine gravel. I am going to put driftwood in for some java moss which should help "soften" the water somewhat if nothing else even if it is a very small amount.

Thanks for the info Angel
