Snails falling off tank walls and dying!

I've now lost 2 snails in a few weeks because they fell off the back wall of the tank and landed on their "backs," and by the time I noticed them they were dead. This happened in 2 different tanks around the same time! Both were tiger nirite snails. They were good hiders and would often be inside decor or behind plants, so it took me a while to realize I hadn't seen them in days and go searching.

Is there something specific that could be causing this? I love having 1 large snail in each of my 10 gallon tanks to clean the algae. They were doing a great job, and since they've died the algae is just starting to grow wild.

They feel inside the tank or outside the tank? If its inside that is really strange my snails fall like this quite often and I have never had any die from it. It will be interesting to see what others have to say.

Kindest Regards,
Amanda

Thanks for the responses. They fall inside the tank, so I found both of them them on the gravel in the tanks on their backs.

I guess I dont know for sure that they fell off the wall, but why else would they be on their backs?

Maybe they died and then fell? I had a Mystery Snail one time that was on his back on the gravel. I thought he was dead, but I waited to see. A few hours later he was roaming about. I don't know how he got on his back and/or why he stayed like that - I had heard if they get flipped on their back they won't be able to get back over and will die. I don't know for sure as this one got turned around. Anyway, I've only had a couple of mystery snails and after a few months, they passed away. I don't think my tank generates enough algae to keep them fed well enough. I have an on-going population of tiny snails from a previous floating plant experiment, but they don't seem to grow and survive...just an endless supply of little guys.
