Snail vs Live plants?

Hey guys. Will snails eat live plants? I have a 10 gallon with a light coating of algae (not enough to be seen unless you're up close), and I'd like to add a snail to perhaps eat the excess food and clean up my glass. I'm wondering, though, if this would put my live plants in danger.

I have a few Argentine Swords and one Java Fern...

Tank residents are 5 corys (Julii) and a betta.

If the snail is a bad idea, is there another creature that might work for the purposes I've listed? Otherwise I guess I'll just remove the algae manually.

With those plants, snails should be fine.

What kind of snails were you thinking? Nerite snails never eat plants, but most of the "pest snails" won't touch healthy plants.

I have MTS, ramshorns, and pond snails in my tanks... They eat dead leaves, but don't do any damage to the plant.

As redchigh said most snails will be okay with plants, in my experience mystery snails should be avoided

Don't even confuse the Pomacea diffusa and Pomacea canaliculata. Mystery snails (Pomacea diffusa) do NOT eat the plants. They are often confused with the latter that do eat plants. I am wondering about your experience with mystery snails. I've kept hundreds of them and never exactly had issues keeping them in planted setups.
