Slow down filter

I need to slow down the filter in my 10g tank, I have a Tetra whisper and the intake isnt bad but the output just destroys the plants near it and creates a whirlpool effect where the fish are all pushed to the opposite side of the tank. Ive seen the some people put like half a gatorade bottle to slowit but Ive never seen how it worked. Any help.

Different type of filter but this is how I tamed the output of my Eclipse's filter.
