We will need to know some info on your tank in order to possibly suggest something. Tank size, all fish in the tank, live plants or not, water parameters (pH, hardness if you know it, temperature), how long has the tank been set up.

In the meantime, the silver dollar is shoaling fish, which means they live together in large groups in the wild. They must be in a group in the aquarium or they will not be healthy no matter what else. Fish that are evolved to live in groups can be severely stressed on their own, and some species also have social interactions within the group. Given the size this fish grows, it needs a largish tank. It is also vegetarian (eats plants). We have fish profiles here, second tab from the left in the blue bar at the top of the screen, or you can click on the shaded name of a fish to see its profile; information there mentions all this plus more.

By the way, welcome to Tropical Fish Keeping forum, as I see you very recently joined us.

Byron.

thanks for the reply. my tank is a 40 gallon that has been set up for several weeks now. it has live plants in it that the silver dollar doesnt mess with. the ph is around 7 but i dont have anyother testing supplies yet so im not sure about the rest. i know he needs more fish of his kind but i didnt know it could affect his health. along with him there is his friend the goldfish and 2 sunrise mollies in the tank. he buddys up with the goldfish and follows him or the goldfish swims with him all day. its like they are buddys : ) i still havent decided on what i really want to stock my tank with yet so thats why i havent bought more fish. would one more silverdollar be enough for him or do i need to buy atleast 2 more?

I do not recommend Silver Dollar for a 40g tank, there is just not sufficient space for a group of this species, and it should be in a group of at least 6 to be less stressed. The store might exchange it if it is healthy, but unlikely if it has something.

Goldfish should not be kept with tropicals, they have different temperature needs for one thing. This may have something to do with the issue.

You could have a number of smaller fish in a 40g. Potentially large fish need sufficient space to grow all their lives. It is the physical space but also the water condition due to the space.

i bought 2 more silverdollars to keep my original one company. one died yesterday and i think the other is retarted. he is constantly freaking out wanting to get out and rubbing his nose raw from running into the glass so much. my original is looling good and will swim up to him as to say "man just chill out... are you retarted?" and he will swim off and hang out with the other fishes. so im thinking about taking him back to the store and just keeping the original since he seems happy by himself.
