I have a cherry shrimp tank.
Cherry shrimp breed quickly, so you can start out with a small group and have plenty in no time. Your filter should be fine. I have found a few shrimp in the filter, but as many as I have, I did not consider it a great loss.
I probably have close to a hundred in my 10 gal right now, probable time to thin them out again soon.

Make sure you plant the tank heavily and you should have no issues with about 75 to 100 shrimp in a 10 gallon.........Like Twistermom said, once they become comfortable with their surroundings, they shold breed like rabbits...........I have 2 tanks with only shrimp in (Blues and Yellows) and a 30 gallon with some tetras and rasboras and a bunch of cherry shrimp in..........The cherries do still breed, but i think the small fish pick off some of the babies when they are small...........I prefer sponge filters for my shrimp tanks, but a small HOB filter will work too.........You might want to put a small piece of pantyhose over the filter inlet so no shrimp end up in your filter.............Lets us know how it works out for you

I would love to send you some, unfortunately my working hours right now, over lap post office hours, so I can not make it to the post office. If things change, I will let you know.
You might want to check Aquabid. com. I have seen shrimp on there for a fair price.

Where do you live?
On aquabid, people send shrimp all over.
I might be able to get my husband to send the shrimp for me, but I have no heat packs. The other morning, it was 35 deg here. Ice on my windshield when I left for work! I could offer now live guarantee without the use of a heat pack.
