should i use this tank or not?

i got a free 20gal from one of my mom's friends who was getting rid of it. the tank had been up and running for a long time. it had some algea built up in the corners and such. it was clean when i got it, i didnt think anything about it. come to find out she had cleaned it inside and out using windex glass cleaner . now, my question: with it being said and done and completely dry would it be okay to use with a good cleaning? is there anything i can use to clean it without harming future fish? just wanted to make sure before i set it up and put fish in it.

thanks

Hi,

Yes, you can use it. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and dry with some paper towels. Windex is made of ammonia, soap, water, and some other stuff that aids drying. The ammonia and other stuff vaporizes into the air leaving mostly just the soap film behind. A good rinse and dry will get the soap off. I've used windex on tanks before to clean them without any ill effects.

In fact, I've even used LimeAway to clean tanks of mineral deposits and algae scum. Neutralize it afterwards with baking soda and lots of fresh rinse water, paper towel dry, and rinse again to be sure. I do NOT recommend you try this yourself, but I shared that to let you know I've used much worse than windex without disasters.

You can use some vinegar to help get it even cleaner, just make sure to rinse it really good.

Good advice you two. Same advice here, rinse, rinse rinse. Alcohol and vinega will sterilize it. Just don't use them at the same time! Then rinse really good and voila.
