Shell in betta tank

Today I found this shell at Michael's Craft Store and thought it would be neat to put into my betta tank. But then I was searching around and kept reading conflicting info about shells in tanks, esp. how seashells aren't safe to put in feshwater tanks. Thing is, I don't know if this is a "sea"shell or "freshwater"shell.
And on top of that I'm not even sure if it's a real shell. The shell feels really smooth, not so much like the shells you find at the beach, almost like it's coated
Just wanted to get everyone's opinion

It's a sea shell IMO. Was the shell varnished? I'd keep it out of the tank. Besides increasing pH, it looks ugly in a freshwater tank. Your tank is better off without it.;)

Yeah, if it is varnished, it's probably not safe for aquarium use. If it isn't varnished it will mess with your water parameters-it raises hardness and alkalinity.

so i ended up taking the shell out later last night since when i checked on the tank, the water and everything looked sparkly. i guess the shell had some sort of coating on it. so i rinsed everything and did a compete water change. good thing the betta and shrimp were all acting fine this morning
