Sea Shells

Hi, I got a tank this weekend that had everything in it to run. I know nothing about tanks as this is my first one. The lady I bought it from had seashells in the gravel which I've is bad on the fish, as it makes the ph go high. Should I remove them? Also one shell had never been opened it was sealed shut. This evening sometime it has opened up, and there is a white mucus looking thing stuck in it, and now there is burrows in my gravel. Did something hatch out of the shell? I don't see anything different other than the shell and all the gravel being burrowed with holes, and no gravel in the corners.

I would remove the shells. They do not fit the freshwater setup at all aside from increasing the pH and hardness levels.:)

Any pictures of the shell that seems alive? It could be a clam.

It does look like a clam. I've never kept one so I'll leave it to the others to post their experiences for you.:)

That is a fresh water clam. I believe it has died at that point. When ever any of mine have ever started opening past a little slit, my puffers or clown loach have gobbled them up.

Do you know what type of fish you want to stock your tank? That would help determine if you remove the shells or not. My water is soft and acidic so I just had to add crushed coral to accomodate the new snail.
