might want to keep in mind digging fish or anything that can stir up the sand, would be one way it could find its way into the filter. this might have been covered or not but thought id just throw that out there.

I think this is minimized by having a sand with a larger grain size. Admittedly there are some super fine sands that are best avoided not only for this reason but because they tend to pack and just aren't good substrates for rooted plants if/when they are added (as the fine sand is too dense/packed for roots to easily spread and there's little if any nutrients that penetrate deeply enough).
