If you want cheap & safe sand,go to Asda and buy their childrens play sand.I got some for my Betta & shrimp tank about 10 months ago,its about 1/4 of the price of aquarium sand and it wont effect your PH.
Just may sure you rinse it well before using in your tank,else it will be cloudy for weeks.

Yes, seeing those, I would definitely change your substrate to the smallest-size gravel. What most call regular aquarium gravel will do, in the smallest grain size you can find, and no rough edges. The "natural" gravel you can see in my 115g tank photos [under "Aquariums" below my name on the left] will work fine.
