Sad Day today... Ughhh

Well Just when I thought I had everything under control I came home to a mess today...

My tank water was cloudy again and I had one fish stuck to each filter intake and one floating on the surface.

I have no one to blame but myself for this I never properly cycled my tank. I have been fighting with the water since day 3. Almost every day I do a water change. Any time I try to leave it for more than a day my ammonia starts to climb. Usually no more than .5 ppm

Things seemed to calm down 4 weeks later the ammonia was only traceable .25 or less I had less than 5 ppm nitrate and no nitrites since the first week.

I thought for the most part my tank was cycling... Nearly done. I have several live plants and while my tank is overstocked its not horribly overstocked.

I am running 2 filters and figured by now things should have been established. How wrong was I.

I lost 2 neon tetra's 1 black tetra and 1 oto cat.

Thankfully my 2 expensive fish are ok. although im paranoid.

So I came home to the following test results before I did a massive water change.

PH 7.6
Ammonia 2.0 ppm to 4.0 somewhere in the middle (much higher than normal)
Nitrite 1.0 ppm (first time I have even gotten a reading on this since the last week of December.)
and Nitrate 5.0 give or take ppm.

I did about a 70% water change using only SeaChem's prime with the new water.

Test results after

PH 8.2 (I had no RO water to offset the PH of all the new tap water)
Ammonia .25 or less
Nitrite back to unreadable
Nitrate almost 0

I am so paranoid of losing my Boeseman I love them i have one male and one female and they get along so well with my other fish . The female in color is a little bland but the male seems to like her ;) She was much cheaper as well 4.00 vs 15.00

The rest of my fish as this sounds horrible I wouldn't mind so much.I have kept all the other types of fish years ago in my 55g but never the bosmani.

I am thinking I did something to cause my tank to start cycling all over again... Ughhh The only thing I can think of was I rinsed (in aquarium water) my aqueon filter pad as it was overflowing in the bypass on the filter. I left my aqua clear alone.

Sorry to be blunt, but yes, it is. Your fish are dying and you have ammonia in your tank which you can't control.

You say that your rainbows are "ok", but they're not, they just aren't dead. If you are exposing them to ammonia, they are not ok.

You mention cycling so you've obviously read about it. You know what to do. Get your fish numbers under control, don't fully stock the tank until it's cycled, cycle your tank properly and don't overstock your tank.

Yeah. You sound like you know what's up. I'd avoid replacing any of the dead fish until the cycle is confirmed.

Until you're consistently getting zero ammonia, you're not done and I'd keep doing the water changes. I know it sucks.

Just out of curiosity, are you using strips, or drops to test? If you're using strips, I'd switch to the drops. It's MUCH more accurate and I'd hate for a strip to tell you your done and be lying to you.

I'm sorry Curt. You know I know how you feel.
I hope things start to get under control, and soon.
Maybe run an air pump w/ stone until the tank is cycled? It'll help the fish out with extra oxygen. It really helped my tank when I underwent my last fiasco. Good luck, my friend.

If you're concerned about the age of your API kit, check the lot number that should be printed on the front of all the bottles. The last four digits should be something like 0810 (mine) which indicate that they were manufactured in August of 2010. Anything within the last year and a half to two years should be fine.

Good luck Curt. I'm crossing my fingers for you.

I've got Boesmann rainbows in my 75 gallon tank and love them too!
