Rock turned black

I picked this rock up from the sand in my tank and it had turned black and smelled horrible, Im guessing this is from the anaerobic bacteria or whatever but why is the rock black?

WhAt I can tell you is that yes, that's from anaerobic bacteria, what I can tell you is why
