I have a hillstream loach that I love, he's been with me over 8 years. I've never seen him touch any prepared foods, but he's the best algae eater I've ever had.Of course he doesn't keep the glass completely clean, but better than any other fish I've had. For four years he had all the algae in a 55 to himself and kept up on it.
He's moved across the country with me twice, spending 48 hrs+ in a bag each time. I often worry that one day he will kick the bucket and I wont be able to find another like him, unusual fish are very hard to find around here.
There are numerous species of hillstream loaches, its possible they have different eating habits. I hope you can find a larger home for yours, if not try feeding him different things. I doubt if he will find enough to eat in a 2 gal. For the last 4 years mine has been in a 20 long and spends a lot of time grazing on rocks with little visible algae growth, I think he must be eating micro-critters living there. I plan to move him to my new 50 gal once the algae gets going good.
