Resealing a plexi tank?

Hi all, I have a 55-gallon tank that has been sitting empty for 6 months. We're about to move to a place where I will have room to set it up again, but because the tank is 10 years old I am wondering if I should reseal the seams as a precation. If so, what kind of sealant is recommended for a plexi tank? Is it the same as used for a glass one?

Best wishes for your fishes!

from my experience-

i just set up a 55 gallon. my red eared slider turtle had been living in it and he's a wild one, so the seams were totally frayed.

i didn't touch them and everything was fine.

on the other hand, the tank wasn't ten years old.

You don't reseal a plexiglass tank. If the seam has broken I am almost certain that the tank is scrap.

Plexiglass is sealed with an actual solvent that melts the edges of the plexi together to form a unified bond. While I have head that it is "possible" to fix a crack with solvent I have never heard it being recommended.

Glass is only held together with silcone that can be removed and replaced.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure whether or not plexi tanks were sealed with silicon like glass ones were, so it is great to know. The tank is not cracked and the seams have not separated at all, so I will continue using it as long as it does not leak. Eventually I will get a new tank to replace this one since it is getting older, but for now it is what I have.

Best wishes for your fishes!
