regarding dechlorinators & conditioners

I'm going to the fish store today and I want to get something to dechlorinate my weekly water change water that I get from the tap. My city uses chlorimine and I live in an old building (potentially with trace levels of heavy metals). Also, my water is pretty hard and has a high pH... I think. (haven't tested hardness).
All of the water conditioners I've seen at the store before seem to claim magical powers, but I'm hesitant to believe their labels. Most here seem to recommend Prime or AmQuel+, and I'll look for one of these at the store, but I'm curious as to what ingredients perform which functions. (actually come to think about it... do they even list the ingredients?)

I've never known anyone to say they were disatisfied with Prime. I've used it but have found we do not actually need a water conditioner (deep well with really good water). I don't have a clue what the ingredients in Prime or AmQuel are... and even if I did, I can't say it would mean much to me -- kinda like when I want to know what time it is. I just want to know what time it is, not how to build a watch :)

I was a big prime guy and this stuff is 1000 fold the product of prime. u wont go back trust me. www.jehmco.com sells it. for 35 dollers I get enough to treat 20,000 gallons.

ah... well... I just got back from the store and I got a little thing of Prime. I guess I'll just accept that it's just magic water. =) Or maybe I'll google it later (we'll see how bored I get in class today). =)

I use Prime and swear by it. Never had a problem whatsoever. People also like Amquel+ though I have never used it.
