Reccomendations for a 29 gallon.

I was recently given a standard size 29 gallon aquarium. While I begin to set it up for cycling, I thought this would be a good time to think of what fish I would like to fill the tank with. I've always like cichlids but I'm willing to accept the fact that this is only a 29 gallon and is not suitable for most if any cichlids. But my question is, is there any cichlids that would thrive in this setup? All opinions are welcome.

Welcome to Tropical Fish Keeping forum.

There are some cichlid species that would suit a 29g. If your water parameters are on the soft/slightly acidic side, many dwarf species from South America are possible. Some of these will be wild caught and require specific soft water, but some will also be suitable if your water is more neutral, around pH 7 and medium hardness. If your tap water is fairly hard and basic (pH around 8 or higher) there are a few cichlids such as the shell dwellers from the rift lakes.

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If you’re going to take it under your wing then you’re responsible for it. Every aspect of its life is under your control, from water quality and temperature to swimming space. [Nathan Hill in PFK]

I would maybe consider any form of freshwater chromis... my experience is probably no where near byrons but that would be my two cents... a school or two of chromis would look pretty good in a 29 bow.
