Question Quick question about aragonite sand

Like the title says, very quick. Will aragonite sand lose it's buffering capacity if washed too much? I just put about 40 lbs in my 55 gal tank intending to raise the GH, KH, and pH for my goldfish, but I have not seen a significant increase even after having it in the tank for 24 hours. Did I wash the buffering capacity away?

no, its affect on GH, KH, an pH are due to its chemical composition, and that would not have been changed by rinsing it

Agree. Keep a check on pH and GH, it will go up. Not sure how long this takes, but in my use of just a couple tablespoons in a filter, it was a week when I noticed a rise in pH. But i wasn't monitoring every day.

My tap pH is pretty high, and I think the aragonite only bumped it up to about 8.3 at the highest. My GH and KH rose by one degree (tap water is 3dGH and 2 dKH), but that was it. I really thought the sand would do a lot more.

But I'm glad to know that I didn't destroy the buffering capacity with my washing. I wanted to make sure it was clear of salt.

If it has only been a couple days, you can expect this to rise further over the next few days to weeks.
