ok so i went and got a water test
it was 1$/test and i only had 2$ on me but he gave me 3 tests

Ammonia - the test is supposed to make it turn yellow but for some reason it was green so i dont have the number
Nitrite - 2
pH - 7.4

and he didnt do a nitrate test
he said i should do a 50% water change and try more frequent changes
when i described whats on my tank he didnt know hat it was either
could it be because of the ammonia?
over feeding?
the nitrite?

i hope this helps a little
anymore ideas guys? :)

maybe my guppies are too much for the tank? [ammonia wise. i do have a few]
should i move them to my 20gal?

Maybe you already said, but I can't remember. This was the 5 gal that was tested?
What fish are in that tank?
My ammonia test kit, the water turns green if there is ammonia in the tank. The darker the Green the more ammonia.
The price your LFS charges to run test, you might as well buy your own. The API freshwater testing kit is what I use.
The 50% water change was good advice. I would do 50% everyday, until you have the test kit. If you see ammonia and nitrite are zero, weekly should be enough, unless the tank is overstocked.

i think it is overstocked
iits a 5gal with like 7 guppies and two golden dojo loaches
i think i may hafta transfer my guppies to my 20gal

the guy at the fish store showed me the card and the card said its supposed to be yellow?
maybe he was looking at the wrong card?
the green was like a lime green pretty light! :)
is that good?

how much are the test kits and how long do they normally last?

The Api liquid test kit will last a very long time. You can find them online for around $20, my LFS sells them for about $35.
What all is in the 20 gal? To be honest, the dojo loaches can not live in the 5 gal, long term.
They grow much to large and as you know, they are very active fish.

You are going to need to upgrade. You can keep an eye on Craigslist for a used tank.

The koi alone will get to big for the 20 gal. I don't want to sound harsh, but I think you are headed for trouble.
Dojos enjoy being together, but your 20 is already overstocked. You are in need of a couple big tanks.

ok so i jus took a gander in my tank
my two small females were nipping at one of my plants
my guess is they are nipping at the "specs"

think its maybe eggs or algae from over feeding?
