Trust me, I have done same thing.
When using soil,,best to place the soil in a bucket and as mentioned, add water and knead the soil to consistency of bread dough or Playdough. This will help keep the mixture from escaping along with placing the plant in bucket of AQUARIUM water or DECHLORINATED water after you get it potted to allow anything that's gonna escape to escape into the bucket. I too have paid for skipping this step.

Paperclipgirl, thanks for reposting 1077's advice! I'm going to pot mine in about two hours, will take pics. I'm REALLY glad this info was reposted, as I didn't know to put a layer of pebbles on the bottom of the pots. Whew!

I potted up the plants today and I really like how it turned out! Thanks to 1077's tips and tricks I was able to complete the process without mucking up the tank. I'm sure my discus doesn't care either way but I do. The nylon bag holds substrate from my display tank, used to jump start the tank's cycle. I put some java moss on it in an attempt to make it more attractive. Here's some pics, start to finish:

Before, during and after redecorating:

It's a combination of Egeria densa (pondweed) and Ceratophyllum demersum (hornwort).
Looking forward to seeing your pics when you re-do your tank!

You know, if they made a black bottomed tank that would make those pots and plants pop. Pretty cool idea. Good luck paperclip.

I could easily paint the bottom of my tank black but since it's being used as a hospital tank I need to be able to, how do I say this without being gross?? I need to observe the poo!
It's a great idea though. Too bad I'm too preoccupied with poo right now, lol.
