Question about potential shrimp tank with fluval edge tank..

I've been toying with the idea of a shrimp tank, but I would like to have less than a ten gallon tank if possible.. I found online where I can purchase a replacement Fluval edge tank which is a six gallon tank and I am thinking about maybe buying just the tank and starting my tank set up from there with my own light and a sponge filter.. would this be plausible, or should I just buy like a 5.5 gallon tank and start from there. I'm not sure if a 5.5 gallon tank is enough.. (not that six is much bigger). I also gound an 8 gallon tank online as well.. or petsmart has their 6.6gal ther than that I am not having much luck finding a tank that doesn't already come with a very expensive filter that I am not likely to use.. I have also been considering building a small tank that's maybe 12x12x12 or 15x15x15.. but I am reading that it's not cost effective to build my own tank. With Lowes cutting glass for free, it doesn't seem like it.would cost much for glass & silicone, so I may consider that route...

Any opinions? Ideas?

bigger is always better some say a 10 gallon with plants and deco is the best for bettas.it is also easier to maintain.but cost is and issue here so for a healthy and beautiful betta it will need at least a filter and a heater is it's cold where your from.
