quartz and water quality

Anyone know of any reason why quartz crystal shouldn't be used in a freshwater setup?

From what I've read, the only "reason" is aesthetic: most people just aren't fans of how it looks in a fish tank. It also can have some jagged edges so it might not be the best idea with certain fish.

Chemically there's no reason I can think of. The play sand many people have at the bottom of their aquariums is just powdered quartz.
