Quarantine Tank Question

I am going to pick up a 5 gallon aquarium to use as a Q tank/Hospital tank. Found an awesome deal on CraigsList. How would everyone suggest keeping it cycled? Meaning, should I keep shrimp or something in it all of the time to keep the nitrogen cycle going? Wouldn't that be putting the shrimp or whatever else in danger of catching diseases from the fish being quarantined/treated?

Keep a small sacrificial fish in it.

Don't keep it cycled. Total hassle to do so. I would just get a filter that's an appropriate size for it and run it in one of your other tanks alongside your regular filtration. When you need the Q tank, just fill it and move the filter over and presto! Cycled quarantine tank.

That's a really good idea! I think that is exactly what I'll do

I wouldn't move the filter from the quarantine tank back to the main one ... at least until after a good cleaning and sterilizing

I would also not keep it cycled (and definitely not with a sacrificial fish). This won't work sometimes if you have to use the QT as a hospital, because many medications destroy beneficial bacteria.

I would either (1) keep an extra filter running on your main tank, or (2) just keep extra media inside your main tank or filter. You could transfer the extra media/filter over to the QT as needed, and break it down when you aren't using it. Another option would be to keep a sponge in your main tank, and rig a sponge filter whenever you need the Q.

I would always just toss out the filter media that's been in the QT and replace with new in the main tank, so that the new stuff starts building up its bacteria colony.

Oh, and a bit off-topic - the QT should be barebottom, but with a plant and a hiding place for the fish being homed.

I hope this information helps. :)
