Smile A Quarantine Tank?

I currently have a 20 gallon tank, and lately ive kept on hearing about "quarantine tanks"? So could some one tell me what they are and if they are necessary? THANK YOU (my curiosity always gets me!)

My Tanks:
20 Gallon Community Tank
5 Gallon Guppy and Fry tank

SOON TO COME!!
A 55-75 gallon tank, hopefully

*Remember, its not how big a tank is, its how hard you worked on that small tank.

The answer is in the name really. Its a tank that temporarily houses new fish until you are positive that they are disease free and healthy to go in with your healthy fish. Basically it helps prevent any new fish from introducing diseases into your tank. Quarantine period is usually recommended to be two weeks to a month. Being a temporary tank, a quarantine tank does no have to follow the usual stocking rules.

.... I'm probably drunk.

This is how I lurk
